Court Adjourns Makoko Protest Case to May 2026

The Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba has adjourned the trial of activists Hassan Taiwo and Dele Frank, who are facing charges related to a protest against the demolition of the Makoko waterfront community on January 28, 2026. The court will resume hearings on May 8, 2026.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, representing the defendants, has filed an application for the release of items seized by the police during the protest, including DJ equipment, a first aid box, cash, and flight tickets valued at $30,000. The prosecution, led by Superintendent of Police Anthony Ihiehi, opposes the application, claiming the items are part of the evidence against the defendants.

Falana argued that the continued detention of these items undermines justice and insisted they should be released under a bond. The magistrate also noted a dress code issue with Falana's counsel.

The matter has been adjourned to allow for further proceedings.
