Ex-AGoF Nwabuoku Sentenced to 72 Years for Fraud

Chukwunyer Nwabuoku, the former acting Accountant General of the Federation, was sentenced to 72 years in prison without the option of a fine by Justice Jame Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on March 23, 2025. Nwabuoku was convicted on nine counts of money laundering related to N868 million.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) successfully proved the charges against him beyond a reasonable doubt. Nwabuoku, who served as the Director of Finance and Accounts at the Federal Ministry of Defence from 2019 to 2021, was later appointed as acting Accountant General on May 20, 2022, by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He was suspended in July 2022 due to allegations of N80 billion fraud. The court dismissed arguments from Nwabuoku's lawyer regarding the admissibility of confession statements, affirming that the EFCC had established the necessary elements for conviction.
