Court Orders Detention of Kano Electoral Commission Chairman in ₦1 Billion Fraud Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order for the detention of Prof. Sani Malumfashi, the Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), and a Kwankwaso ally on charges related to a ₦1 billion fraud case.

The court also ordered two senior officials of the commission, Ana Muham Mustapha and Ado Garba, to be kept in custody. The accused individuals are facing charges of fraud and money laundering, with allegations of illegally possessing and moving large sums of money within KANSIEC's accounts and a private company named SLM Agro Global Farm.

The funds were reportedly transferred through Jaiz Bank, violating the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act of 2022. Despite pleading not guilty, the court remanded the accused in custody pending the fulfillment of bail conditions.

The case has drawn public attention due to its implications on the electoral institution responsible for conducting local government elections in Kano State.
