Enugu Court Orders UK to Pay £420 Million for 1949 Massacre

The Enugu State High Court, under Justice Anthony Onovo, has ruled that the British Government must pay £420 million to the families of 21 coal miners killed in the 1949 Enugu massacre. The miners were protesting harsh working conditions and racial wage disparities when British authorities opened fire, resulting in deaths and injuries.

The court ordered the UK to issue a formal apology and pay post-judgment interest until the full compensation is settled. The case was brought by human rights activist Mazi Greg Onoh, seeking acknowledgment, apology, and compensation for the victims' families.

The court held the British colonial administration liable for the extrajudicial killings and violations of the victims' rights. The judgment also emphasized the need for redress and justice for historical human rights abuses.
