Ogun Court Remands NYSC Official Over Corps Member's Death

On Monday, an Ogun State magistrate court in Abeokuta ordered the remand of Abass Olalekan, an official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), following allegations of his involvement in the unlawful abortion that resulted in the death of 23-year-old corps member Victoria Ariyo. The remand order was issued by Magistrate O.T.

Odubanjo after an ex parte motion was filed by the police prosecuting counsel, Solomon Babalola, to amend charges against Olalekan. Initially charged with conspiracy and attempted procurement of an abortion, Olalekan pleaded not guilty.

However, the case took a turn as he was re-arraigned with amended charges that now include murder. The charges specify that Olalekan and others conspired to commit felony through unlawful abortion, leading to Ariyo's death.

The court granted bail of N500,000 with conditions, but Olalekan remains in custody at the Oba Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions. The case is adjourned until June 1 for further proceedings.
