Court Dismisses Gwarzo's Impeachment Halt Suit

The Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice S.M. Shuaibu, struck out a suit filed by former Deputy Governor Gwarzo, who sought to halt impeachment proceedings initiated against him by the Kano State House of Assembly.

The suit was filed on March 25, 2023, aiming to restrain the Assembly from continuing the impeachment process that commenced on March 5, 2023. However, the court had previously declined to grant an interim injunction to halt the process and directed the Assembly to justify why relief was not granted, with the matter adjourned to April 16, 2023.

The impeachment move against Gwarzo is believed to be linked to ongoing political realignments in the state, particularly following his refusal to defect to the New Nigeria Peoples Party from the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The Kano State House of Assembly's impeachment notice was endorsed by 38 lawmakers, citing provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, with allegations against Gwarzo involving kickbacks from 44 local government councils in the state.
