Court Denies Kano Deputy Governor's Impeachment Halt Request

The Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice M. Shaibu, denied Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam's urgent request to stop impeachment proceedings initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly.

Abdussalam, represented by lawyer Umar Danbaito, sought an interim injunction to suspend all actions taken by the Assembly until the main suit could be heard. The court ruled that Abdussalam did not meet the legal requirements necessary for such an urgent order.

Justice Shaibu emphasized that the ex parte application did not satisfy the strict conditions required by law. The matter has been adjourned to April 16, 2026, for further hearings.

The impeachment process against Abdussalam began on March 5, 2023, following allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust, including claims of financial misconduct involving significant sums of money. The Deputy Governor was given 14 days to respond to the allegations.
