Nigerian MSMEs Lose N5–N10 Trillion to Employee Fraud

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has reported that Nigeria's micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) lose between N5 trillion and N10 trillion each year due to employee fraud and workplace corruption. This alarming trend is described as a serious hidden threat to the country's entrepreneurial economy.

The CPPE's analysis indicates that internal fraud and employee-related corruption account for substantial annual losses across Nigeria's MSME sector, weakening government revenue and reducing tax collection. The report suggests that the actual economic impact may be even higher than current estimates, highlighting the pervasive nature of occupational fraud that quietly erodes the foundations of Nigeria's private sector.

The CPPE emphasizes the need for coordinated action among business owners and regulatory policymakers to address this issue, as employee corruption has evolved into a significant economic risk requiring strategic intervention.
