Cross River Teacher Wins National Literacy Award in Abuja

Bless Samuel Ikoni, a primary school teacher from Abi Local Government Area in Cross River State, received a national honor at the Abuja summit organized by the Federal Ministry of Education on January 26, 2026. She emerged as the winner in the Basic Education category after a highly competitive selection process that included a written examination and practical classroom demonstration assessed by educational experts.

Ikoni, a certified Jolly Phonics trainer, previously excelled at the state level before advancing to the national stage. She emphasized that the award reflects her dedication to building a strong literacy foundation for children, particularly through the Jolly Phonics method.

Ikoni is currently a teacher leader within her local government education authority, mentoring colleagues and supporting literacy development. The summit highlighted the effectiveness of the Jolly Phonics program, with other winners from different regions, including Bashar Hantsi from Kebbi State and Khadija Galadima from Niger State, showcasing the program's positive impact on literacy skills across Nigeria.
