Nigeria Customs Service Dismantles Fuel Smuggling Network

On March 31, 2026, the Nigeria Customs Service announced the dismantling of a fuel smuggling network operating along the Southwest border corridor. This operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal export of premium motor spirit (PMS).

During a press briefing held at the Customs Training College in Ikeja, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Abubakar Aliyu disclosed that the operation successfully intercepted 14,875 liters of PMS over the past few weeks, based on credible intelligence. The seizures occurred across several locations, including Imeko, Ilara, Ilaro, Idiroko, Seme, and Badagry, resulting in the recovery of 544 jerrycans, each containing 24 liters of fuel.

The duty-paid value of the seized products is estimated at N14,875,000. Customs officials noted that the seized fuel will be auctioned in line with regulations to prevent its diversion back into illegal channels, with participation from relevant government agencies, security personnel, and media representatives to ensure transparency.

Aliyu commended the role of the National Security Adviser in strengthening collaboration among security agencies to improve the fight against smuggling activities.
