Nigeria Customs Seizes Over 635,000 Litres of Smuggled Petrol

The Nigeria Customs Service has reported the seizure of 635,132 litres of smuggled petrol, known as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), as part of its ongoing crackdown dubbed "Operation Whirlwind." This operation has been active for six months and has intercepted contraband across various locations in Nigeria, particularly in Ogun and Lagos states. Kola Oladeji, the former national coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, detailed that 1,980 jerrycans, equivalent to 49,500 litres and valued at N80.4 million, were seized in the last seven weeks alone.

Mahmoud Ibrahim, the comptroller of the Kebbi area command, disclosed that a total of 35,725 litres of contraband worth N109.5 million was intercepted in Kebbi. The operation aims to safeguard national resources and protect the economy from the adverse effects of fuel smuggling, which poses serious safety risks and deprives the nation of vital revenue.
