Nigeria Customs Service Denies Smuggling Allegations

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has refuted allegations regarding increased smuggling, revenue leakage, recruitment impropriety, and manipulation of succession within the service. Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada stated these claims were misrepresentations of the NCS's operations in a response to an investigative report published on August 7, 2026.

The report alleged intensified smuggling along various corridors, including Seme and Idiroko, and manipulation of the 846 valuation code at major commands. Maiwada countered that the service's enforcement activities and regular seizures contradicted claims of a smuggling surge.

He explained that the 846 code is a digital tool for assessing vehicles with non-standard identification numbers, ensuring proper valuation. The NCS also addressed recruitment processes, stating they followed guidelines from the Nigeria Customs Service Board and the Federal Character Commission.

Promotions within the service are based on seniority and merit, not favoritism. Maiwada highlighted ongoing leadership training as part of the service's human capital development strategy.
