Customs and NDLEA Seize N16bn Cannabis Shipment in Lagos

The Nigeria Customs Service, specifically the Tincan Island Command, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), successfully intercepted a shipment containing 8,347 packages of cannabis indica weighing 4,173.5 kilograms, with an estimated street value of N16.69 billion. This operation took place at Tincan Island Port, Lagos, following credible intelligence gathered jointly by both agencies.

The 40-foot container, marked Hamu 247034, underwent thorough physical examination, leading to the discovery of the illicit drug, which originated from Canada. Frank Onyeka, the Customs Area Controller, stated that this seizure represents a deliberate attempt by criminal syndicates to undermine national security and endanger the lives of Nigerians, particularly the youth.

He emphasized the need for intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering to prevent illegal imports. The operation was part of a broader effort that included previous seizures of cannabis indica on April 27 and April 30, showcasing the ongoing success of intelligence-driven anti-narcotics operations at Nigeria's seaports.
