Team Nigeria Wins Three Gold Medals in Weightlifting

On Day Four of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria excelled in weightlifting, securing three gold medals. Edidiong Joseph Umoafia won gold in the men’s 71kg event with a record total lift of 319kg, including a Games record of 147kg in the snatch.

He outperformed Samoa’s Joseph Tafi (314kg) and Nauru’s Elgin Moses (310kg). In the women’s 53kg event, Onome Didih claimed gold, setting new Commonwealth Games records in the snatch (93kg), clean and jerk (113kg), and total lift (206kg).

Rafiatu Folashade Lawal continued the success by winning gold in the women’s 58kg event with a record-breaking performance. Additionally, Team Nigeria's sprinters showed promise, with Favour Ashe winning his heat in the men’s 100m, and 17-year-old Miracle Ezechukwu winning her heat in the women’s 100m, both advancing to the semifinals.
