Umoafia Wins Gold, Sets Record at Glasgow 2026 Games

Edidiong Joseph Umoafia of Team Nigeria secured a gold medal in the men's 71kg weightlifting event at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Umoafia delivered an impressive performance, lifting 147kg in the snatch and matching the best of 172kg in the clean and jerk, culminating in a winning total of 319kg.

This achievement represents Team Nigeria's fourth gold medal and second medal in weightlifting at the Games. Samoa's John Lautafi Tafi earned the silver medal with a total lift of 314kg, while Ezekiel Moses of Nauru took home the bronze with a total of 310kg.

Overall, Team Nigeria has achieved a total of eight medals at the Glasgow 2026 Games, comprising four gold and four silver medals.
