Nigerian Government Websites Lack Cybersecurity Testing

A recent analysis reveals that most Nigerian government websites have not undergone security testing, leading to significant concerns regarding cybersecurity breaches. The Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched an investigation into alleged breaches involving Remita Payment Service and Sterling Bank, where hackers reportedly accessed extensive datasets, including sensitive financial records.

In March, First City Monument Bank (FCMB) was targeted in a large-scale cyber fraud operation, resulting in the attempted theft of N3 billion, with N677 million successfully transferred before further attacks were halted. The NDPC is also investigating the e-commerce platform Temu for mishandling personal data belonging to approximately 12.7 million Nigerians.

Experts, including the Managing Partner of NairaMetrics Consult, stress the urgent need for government organizations to adopt stronger security measures and conduct thorough audits of online services. They call for a framework that holds third-party vendors accountable and ensures that all government platforms meet minimum security standards to protect citizens' information.
