Nigeria Establishes Cybersecurity Council to Combat Threats

The Nigerian government has initiated renewed efforts to bolster the country's cybersecurity framework by establishing a National Cybersecurity Coordinating Council. Announced by Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, in Abuja on Wednesday, this initiative aims to enhance collaboration between the public and private sectors to address the increasing cyber threats facing Nigeria's rapidly expanding digital economy.

The council will focus on developing sector-wide cybersecurity defense protocols and building the capacity of Nigeria's cybersecurity workforce. It will include participation from various stakeholders, including Chief Information Security Officers from major sectors and cybersecurity professional associations.

The initiative is part of a larger strategy to improve intelligence sharing and coordinated responses to cyber incidents, which pose significant risks to both public and private entities. Dr. Tijani emphasized the necessity of a collective defense model to effectively manage cyber risks, highlighting the importance of preparedness in the face of contemporary cyber threats.
