Cybercrime: Nigeria Deports First Batch of 192 Chinese, Philippine Convicts

Nigeria has deported the first batch of 192 Chinese and Philippine nationals convicted of cyber terrorism and Ponzi scheme offenses. The Nigerian Immigration Service carried out the deportation, with 42 individuals scheduled to leave the country.

These deportees were among the 759 people arrested in a major raid on December 10, 2023, in Lagos. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted the case, highlighting the seriousness of the crimes committed.

The charges included using fake identities online to defraud victims and engaging in fraudulent practices. The EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, emphasized the significance of the convictions and deportations in Nigeria's fight against cybercrime and financial fraud.

The operation is seen as a milestone in cracking down on transnational financial crimes and restoring national dignity.
