Dangote to Build 1,000MW Power Plant in Kenya

Dangote Industries is set to establish a 1,000-megawatt liquefied natural gas power plant in Kenya, which will be supplied with gas from neighboring Tanzania. This initiative is part of Dangote's broader refinery project in Lamu, creating an industrial complex that integrates refining and power generation.

The Kenyan government is currently in negotiations with Dangote Industries to increase the power capacity to 1,000MW, aiming to secure a more reliable electricity supply for both industries and households. The proposed plant, which was initially planned to be smaller, is expected to run on LNG, providing a consistent electricity source alongside Kenya's existing energy mix of hydro, wind, and solar power.

This project could also facilitate a new route for Tanzanian natural gas into Kenya's energy market, potentially through a pipeline or as LNG shipped to Lamu. At 1,000MW, the plant would rank among the largest gas-to-power projects in East Africa.
