Dangote Refinery MD Clarifies: Not Importing Fuel, Processing Nigerian Crude Oil

The Managing Director of Dangote Petroleum Refinery, David Bird, clarified that the refinery, located in Lekki, Lagos, is not importing finished petroleum products but is processing Nigerian crude oil. The refinery operates on a merchant refining model, distinguishing it from conventional refineries in countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Unlike those refineries, Dangote's does not solely rely on a crude oil pipeline but processes a variety of Nigerian crude oils. Bird highlighted the refinery's significant tank farm and processing units, enabling the processing of different crude feedstocks to produce a range of high-value products.

The refinery's focus is on converting heavy residue crude into high-value products through advanced conversion units. Bird emphasized that the refinery does not aim to import finished products but will import intermediates like high-sulfur reform for processing.

The facility is designed to meet global specifications and produce low-sulfur petrol. The refinery's blend process system allows for the upgrading of various streams to meet international standards.
