Maiduguri Resident's Death Raises Military Accountability Concerns

The death of Mustapha, known as Abchin, on March 22 near the Federal High Court in Maiduguri has ignited a dispute between his family and the Nigerian Army. Preliminary reports suggest he was unarmed and returning from a Sallah visit when he was fatally shot by military personnel, raising allegations of extrajudicial killing.

The family, represented by lawyer Hamza N. Dantani, expressed serious concerns over the military's narrative, which they believe attempts to obscure the truth and influence the investigation's outcome.

They allege that Mustapha was tortured before his death and that evidence, including photographs, supports their claims. The Joint Task Force North East, represented by Lt.

Col. Sani Uba, acknowledged the incident and stated that an investigation is ongoing to clarify the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The family is calling for accountability and transparency from the military regarding the actions of the soldiers involved.
