NCDC Reports Lassa Fever Death Toll Reaches 168 in Nigeria - Concerns Over Steady New Cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported that the death toll from Lassa fever in Nigeria has reached 168 by week 38 of the year. The NCDC disclosed that there have been 906 suspected cases and 166 confirmed cases across 21 states and 106 Local Government Areas.

Lassa fever is caused by the Lassa virus and is endemic in several West African countries. The World Health Organization highlighted that the virus is primarily transmitted through contact with contaminated rodent urine or feces.

Despite efforts, the number of new confirmed cases has remained steady, with 11 reported cases in Ondo, Edo, and Taraba States. The NCDC expressed concern over the continuous fatalities and urged for enhanced infection prevention and control measures.
