Delta Leaders Deny Rape Claims, Acknowledge Harassment

Leaders from the Ozoro community in Delta State have denied allegations of rape linked to the Alu festival, while admitting to incidents of harassment. Following a viral video showing men harassing women at the festival, Delta State Governor condemned the behavior as barbaric and unacceptable.

The community leaders, including President Berklei Asiafa and Secretary General Obaro Egwar, issued a statement clarifying that the festival, which celebrates fertility and cultural practices, was misrepresented. They acknowledged that certain traditional practices were misinterpreted and misapplied, leading to harassment of young women.

The leaders stressed that no incidents of rape occurred during the festival and described the circulating reports as false and misleading. They have contacted security agencies to restore order and have initiated an investigation into the matter.

The community leaders condemned all forms of harassment and misconduct, asserting that such behavior is not part of their cultural tradition and will not be tolerated in future celebrations.
