Lagos Assembly Concludes Probe into Makoko Demolition

On March 5, 2026, the Lagos State House of Assembly's ad hoc committee, led by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, concluded its investigation into the demolition of structures in the Makoko area, affecting the communities of Makoko, Sogunro, and Oko Agbon. During the hearings, various representatives presented differing views on compensation and relocation for displaced residents.

Advocates from Makoko, including Francis Agoyon, argued for permanent relocation rather than financial compensation, while Sogunro community representatives suggested a financial compensation of N10 million for displaced persons, noting the average cost to construct a bamboo house in the area is approximately N4 million. Vice Chairman of the Fishermen Association, Tobi, highlighted the growing tension within the community due to uncertainty about the outcome.

Traditional leader Noheem Adam expressed concerns over the shifting stance of the communities regarding compensation. The committee will compile its findings for the full assembly's consideration, including the need for proper boundaries for the demolition exercise.
