Lagos Assembly Promises Compensation for Makoko Demolition Victims

The Lagos State House of Assembly has pledged compensation to residents of Makoko and adjacent communities in Yaba Local Government Area affected by recent demolition orders. The decision was announced by the Chairman of the ad hoc committee constituted by the Speaker of the House, Mr. Noheem Adams, after a meeting with community representatives at the Lateef Jakande Auditorium in the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja.

The Assembly has directed an immediate halt to the demolition exercise and the suspension of further demolitions until further notice. Residents whose properties have already been demolished will be compensated.

The task force involved in the demolitions has been instructed to engage with community representatives to ensure adequate representation and to guarantee that the demolitions cease. Community members expressed appreciation for the Assembly's intervention and hope for a resolution.

The Lagos State government has defended the demolitions as being in the interest of waterfront communities, with plans to spend $10 million on regenerating Makoko.
