Nigeria Confirms Only Citizens Under UK Migration Deal

The Nigerian presidency has issued a statement regarding a new migration deal with the United Kingdom, emphasizing that only Nigerian citizens will be accepted for return under this agreement. Temitop Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, clarified that Nigeria is not obligated to accept non-Nigerians deported by the UK.

The agreement, signed by Nigeria's Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's state visit, focuses on the proper return and reintegration of affected Nigerians. Ajayi noted that the arrangement includes identity checks and safeguards to protect vulnerable individuals, ensuring that their rights are respected.

The deal also aims to strengthen border control and improve data exchange, while providing protections for victims of trafficking. The presidency urged Nigerians to disregard false reports and to verify information regarding the agreement.
