Deputy Speaker Kalu Seeks UK Support for Nigeria's Democracy

Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives, called for sustained technical support from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) for Nigeria's democratic governance during a recent meeting in London.

Kalu met with top FCDO officials, including Director General Christina Scott, on the sidelines of an engagement at Chatham House. He expressed gratitude for the FCDO's efforts to deepen democratic governance in Nigeria, highlighting the historical ties and shared commitments between Nigeria and the UK.

Kalu emphasized the importance of electoral integrity, civic participation, and conflict prevention in strengthening Nigeria's democracy. He noted the progress made in electoral reforms, including lessons learned from the 2023 elections and the need for clearer electoral rules and improved technology for the upcoming 2026 Electoral Act.

Kalu reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to constitutional rule and expressed hope for a deeper strategic relationship with the FCDO to enhance Nigeria's democratic stability, which he described as pivotal for economic stability in West Africa.
