Banditry Persists in Katsina Despite Peace Agreements

In Katsina State, despite peace agreements brokered by local governments and community leaders with bandit groups, banditry continues unabated. Residents report persistent killings, abductions, and livestock rustling, with over 138,000 people displaced due to insecurity and natural disasters from January 2025 to January 2026, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

Communities entered into agreements with armed groups, expecting a cessation of attacks and the release of kidnapped victims. However, residents from Bakori, Malumfashi, and other areas report that bandits still operate freely.

Aminu Magaji, a former chairman of Bakori Local Government Council, stated that around 200 people remain in captivity. Residents like Mahadi Dan Binta Guga and Naziru Mu’azu voiced concerns over the flawed peace process, citing inadequate security measures and the weakening of local vigilantes.

Two local government chairmen suggested that the agreements require regular reviews and renewals to be effective.
