IGP's Committee Proposes Framework for State Police

The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has presented a committee report recommending the establishment of state police in Nigeria. The report suggests redeploying 60% of the current Nigerian police personnel to state police services, which would involve a two-tier policing system.

The committee, chaired by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, proposes that the federal police retain 40% of personnel while the remaining 60% would be transferred to state police. This framework aims to address local crime and enhance community policing.

The report also recommends the creation of a National Police Standard Board to set minimum standards for police services and the establishment of a State Police Fund to finance operations. However, the proposal has garnered mixed reactions, with some experts, including former DSS Director Mike Ejiofor, criticizing the plan for relying on the transfer of federal officers instead of recruiting and training local personnel.
