DHQ Confirms Identity of Killed Terrorist Leader

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) issued a clarification regarding the identity of the killed terrorist leader, Abu Bilal al Minuki, following public confusion stemming from media reports. This clarification came after a joint counterterrorism operation conducted by Nigerian troops in collaboration with the United States Africa Command on May 16, 2026.

Major General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, explained that the prevalence of similar names among insurgents in the North East and Lake Chad Basin complicates identification efforts. Terrorists often adopt aliases as part of their tactics to conceal their identities, which frustrates intelligence operations.

Uba stated that the recent neutralization of al Minuki was confirmed through a combination of human intelligence and technical surveillance. He emphasized that there is no ambiguity regarding the identity of the individual killed, marking a significant success in ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist leadership structures and weaken extremist networks that threaten national and regional security.
