DSS Clarifies Interaction with Prof. Okey Ndibe at Airport

Prof. Okey Ndibe, a notable writer and public intellectual, was placed on Nigeria's security watchlist on January 29, 2013, during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Recently, during an encounter at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the Department of State Services (DSS) clarified its actions regarding Ndibe's status. The DSS explained that its interaction with Ndibe was part of a routine review of the watchlist, which dates back to the military era, to ensure that citizens are not unnecessarily inconvenienced or embarrassed.

The current DSS leadership, under the new director general, is committed to reviewing long-standing watchlist records. The agency aims to facilitate the final delisting of individuals who no longer pose a security risk.

The DSS reiterated its respect for the rule of law and human rights, urging affected citizens to formally report their cases to facilitate the ongoing review process.
