DSS Clarifies No Arrest of Professor Okey Ndibe at Airport

The Department of State Services (DSS) issued a clarification regarding the status of Professor Okey Ndibe, stating he was neither arrested nor detained at Murtala Muhammed International Airport on June 1, 2026. The current Director-General of the DSS, upon assuming duty, directed a review of an old watchlist, which dates back to the military era, to prevent unnecessary embarrassment to citizens.

The review process aims to ensure that individuals with a travel history are not hindered by outdated watchlist entries. Professor Ndibe was placed on the watchlist on January 29, 2013.

The DSS emphasized that the review of such cases is routine and involves interactions with relevant agencies. The agency also mentioned that Mr.

Lanre Arogundade, Executive Director of the International Press Centre, was successfully delisted in May 2025 after a similar review. The DSS reiterated its commitment to treating Nigerians fairly and respecting the rule of law and human rights.
