Nigeria Unveils Phase 2 of Legal Basis Project for Digital Economy

The Phase 2 of the Legal Basis Project for Nigeria's Digital Economy was unveiled in Abuja, focusing on establishing a robust framework for data protection. The event brought together key stakeholders from the digital economy ecosystem, including representatives from the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and others.

Dr. Ololade Shyllon, Meta's Director of Privacy Policy for Africa, Middle East, and Turkey, addressed the need for compliance and the importance of understanding the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023.

The project aims to ensure that data processors respect the rights of data subjects and goes beyond mere consent. The first phase of the project was completed successfully, receiving 4,360 unique visitors and generating significant engagement across digital channels.

The second phase is set to launch on October 13, 2025, with a focus on addressing knowledge gaps and aligning Nigerian data protection laws with international best practices.
