Nigerian Government Enforces Data Protection Act Compliance

On July 27, 2026, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, issued Circular No. 59805/S.I/74, directing all Federal Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to implement the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023. This directive follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's emphasis on the strategic importance of data for national development and the necessity for its lawful processing and protection.

The circular mandates MDAs to ensure compliance with the Act and related regulations, appoint qualified Data Protection Officers (DPOs), and submit their details to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC). Additionally, MDAs are required to allocate budgetary provisions for data protection activities and conduct compliance audits.

Permanent Secretaries and Chief Executive Officers of MDAs will be held accountable for adherence to these directives. Dr Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, praised the government's commitment to data privacy and its role in enhancing public service delivery and institutional transparency.
