Melaye Warns Against EFCC Action on Atiku's Allegations

Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye, speaking on behalf of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warned that the party would mobilize mass public resistance if the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invites, arrests, or questions former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar regarding a corruption petition. This warning was issued in a video posted on Melaye's X account on Friday, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The petition, submitted by former member Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma and signed by his lawyer Hannibal Uwaifo, requests the EFCC to reopen allegations against Atiku related to abuse of office and money laundering from 2005 and 2006. Atiku has previously denied any wrongdoing, labeling the allegations as politically motivated.

A High Court ruling on December 20, 2006, set aside the EFCC's indictment against him. Melaye characterized the renewed petition as an attempt to use state institutions against Atiku as the ADC prepares for the upcoming elections, where Atiku is the party's candidate.
