Diphtheria Outbreak in Adamawa Claims 19 Lives

As of September 10, 2026, at least 19 individuals have died from suspected diphtheria in Adamawa State, resulting in a case fatality rate of 20.6%. The Adamawa State Ministry of Health and Human Services reported that the number of suspected cases has reached 92, with 15 new cases identified in local government areas including Gombi, Ganye, Mubi South, Mayo-Belwa, Yola North, and Yola South.

Currently, seven patients are receiving treatment at various health facilities. The ministry has expressed concern over the high fatality rate and is taking measures to prevent further transmission, including intensified epidemiological investigations, laboratory surveillance, and public awareness campaigns about symptoms and vaccination.

Infection control measures are being strengthened at health facilities, and healthcare workers are being trained on early recognition and management of cases. The ministry has also coordinated the supply of necessary treatment materials and urged residents to seek medical attention for symptoms such as sore throat and difficulty breathing.
