Diphtheria Outbreak in Plateau Claims 23 Lives, 143 Infected

The Diphtheria outbreak in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State has claimed 23 lives and infected 143 others. Dr Nicholas Ba’am-Nigerian, the Commissioner for Health, confirmed the situation, stating that patients are receiving treatment at Jos University Teaching Hospital and Plateau State Specialist Hospital.

The outbreak is concentrated in the Rikkos community, and health officials are working to prevent its spread to neighboring areas. Baks Bulus, the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer for Jos North, reported that 15 deaths occurred within three days of the outbreak, warning of potential additional cases without urgent preventive measures.

Diphtheria, a bacterial infection, spreads through close contact, and those sharing personal items with infected individuals are at risk. Vaccinated children are less affected, but unvaccinated children face severe risks.

Residents are urged to maintain good hygiene and report symptoms to health facilities, as early detection is crucial for saving lives.
