Cholera Outbreak in Plateau State Claims 14 Lives

Plateau State has reported 441 suspected cases of cholera and 14 deaths across four local government areas. Dr Nicholas Ba’amlong, the Commissioner for Health, confirmed 20 positive Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) cases and six laboratory-confirmed cases.

The outbreak, first detected in Mangu Local Government Area in June, prompted a coordinated emergency response involving local governments and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). Mangu recorded 53 suspected cases, with 10 testing positive and four confirmed by laboratory culture, resulting in 10 deaths across nine wards and 64 settlements.

Currently, there are no active cholera cases in Mangu, with the last case reported on July 22. Jos North has seen 277 suspected cases, seven positive RDT, one laboratory-confirmed case, and four deaths affecting 61 settlements in 14 wards.

Jos South recorded one confirmed case, while Barkin Ladi reported its first case on July 16, with 23 suspected cases and no deaths.
