Plateau State Reports 14 Cholera Deaths and 441 Cases

Plateau State has recorded 14 cholera deaths and 441 suspected cases, as reported by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, in Jos.

The state confirmed 20 positive Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) cases and six laboratory-confirmed cases, with infections spanning 25 wards and 107 settlements. The outbreak was first detected in Mangu Local Government Area in early June 2026, leading to a multi-sectoral emergency response involving local councils, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and development partners.

Mangu, the outbreak's epicenter, reported 53 suspected cases, with 10 testing positive and 10 deaths across nine wards. Currently, only three patients remain hospitalized in Jos North, indicating effective government interventions.

Jos North has recorded 277 suspected cases and four deaths, while Jos South has one confirmed case with no fatalities. The government has intensified case searches and community surveillance, providing free treatment at designated centers and training healthcare workers with support from WHO and UNICEF.
