Benue Health Commissioner Confirms No Diphtheria Cases

Dr Paul Ogwuche, the State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, stated during an interview in Makurdi that Benue has not recorded any cases of diphtheria. He highlighted the importance of vigilance due to the movement of people to and from neighboring Nasarawa State, where the disease may be present.

Diphtheria, caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, is a contagious bacterial infection affecting the nose and throat, primarily spreading through respiratory droplets in crowded settings. To prepare for any potential outbreak, the ministry's Epidemiology and Public Health Emergency Operations Centre has been activated to respond to suspected or confirmed cases.

Additionally, immunization coverage has been enhanced across all 23 local government areas in Benue. Dr Ogwuche urged parents and caregivers to ensure children receive routine immunizations and to seek prompt medical attention if symptoms such as fever and difficulty swallowing arise.
