Diri Launches Bayelsa Gov’s Cup to Boost Grassroots Sports

On [date not specified], Governor Douye Diri officially launched the Bayelsa Gov’s Cup with a ceremonial kick-off match between two Bayelsa select sides, marking the commencement of the tournament. The event aims to promote grassroots sports development, with Diri commending the organizers for their foresight in creating a platform for various capacity-building programs.

The tournament will feature 257 teams, including 227 male teams, 28 female teams, and two para soccer teams, and is set to take place over the course of the season. The tournament coincides with the 30th anniversary of Bayelsa State's creation, and former Nigerian international Jossi Dombray and former Bayelsa Queen star Ebier Wealth were present to speak at the opening match held at the Samson Siasia Stadium.

Deputy Governor Dr. Peter Akp emphasized that sports development is incomplete without grassroots involvement.

The tournament is being organized in collaboration with FC Barcelona, which will provide technical advice.
