Advocates Push for Disability Inclusion in Nigeria

Disability advocates in Nigeria are calling for the implementation of commitments made at a global summit aimed at improving the inclusion of persons with disabilities across various sectors, including education, healthcare, and employment. Adejumo, a representative from the Disability Rights Fund (DRF), noted that while the Nigerian government has made pledges, progress remains slow due to inadequate legal frameworks and action plans.

She emphasized the need for stronger voices and commitments to ensure accountability in translating these commitments into actionable outcomes. Adejumo raised concerns about the lack of access to healthcare services for persons with disabilities, particularly the absence of sign language interpreters, which can jeopardize lives during emergencies.

The Nigerian Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has also been criticized for the low participation of persons with disabilities in social protection programs. Advocates are urging the government to adopt disability-friendly recruitment policies and improve access to public infrastructure to facilitate the inclusion of persons with disabilities in national development.
