Nigerian DisCos Collect N603bn Despite Power Offtake Drop

In the second quarter of 2026, electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria earned N603.64bn from customers, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission's report. This occurred despite a decline in the average energy offtake, which fell to 3,197.03 megawatt-hours per hour, a decrease of 3.40% from the first quarter.
The DisCos received 6,982.32 gigawatt-hours of electricity but billed customers for only 5,812.31GWh, resulting in an energy accounting efficiency of 83.24%. The billing efficiency also declined to 78.67%.
However, collection efficiency improved to 81.06%, recovering N603.64bn from the billed amount. The report highlighted that the Aggregate Technical, Commercial and Collection losses across the 11 DisCos stood at 36.23%, significantly above the 2026 MYTO target of 16.92%.
The cumulative upstream invoice payable by the DisCos was N410.38bn, with an outstanding balance of N24.94bn after remittances.
