Prof. Kurfi Condemns Price Hikes After Kano Fire Outbreaks

Prof. Mainasara Yakubu Kurfi, a lecturer at Bayero University Kano, condemned the unethical price hikes by traders in Kano, particularly in the aftermath of two separate fire outbreaks at the Singer Market. These incidents resulted in significant losses of goods and properties worth billions of Naira.

In a statement shared on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday, Prof. Kurfi urged traders to fear Allah and reminded them of their moral responsibilities, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, when the welfare of citizens should be prioritized. He noted that traders at the Singer Market had received sympathy, prayers, and even financial support from federal and state governments, as well as politicians, following the fire tragedy.

However, instead of alleviating the burden on the people, some traders resorted to hoarding and inflating prices of essential goods. Prof. Kurfi expressed concern that such profit-driven behavior undermines public trust and exploits citizens during a time meant for community support and charity.
