Dr. Elizabeth Alonge Advocates for Investment in Breastfeeding in Nigeria

Dr. Elizabeth Lola Alonge, Founder of Child Health Advocacy Initiative (CHAI), emphasizes the importance of investing in breastfeeding and activating the National Policy on Infant and Young Child Feeding in Nigeria.

Despite World Breastfeeding Week 2025 ending, the conversation on infant nutrition and maternal health continues. Alonge highlights the low exclusive breastfeeding rate in Nigeria and the need for a supportive environment for mothers.

She urges the government, civil society, and communities to address barriers hindering breastfeeding. Currently, 80% of nursing mothers in Nigeria practice exclusive breastfeeding, while 20% combine breastfeeding with other methods.

Lack of proper education and exposure to misinformation contribute to this issue, along with aggressive formula marketing.
