Driver Killed, Passengers Injured in Abakaliki Crash

On Tuesday, a fatal road accident occurred on the Abakaliki–Afikpo Trans-Saharan Highway, resulting in the death of a driver employed by Peace Mass Transit. The incident took place near Centenary City Junction, close to Central Park in Abakaliki.

The commercial Hiace bus, which had just arrived in Abakaliki, collided with a lorry that was reversing onto the highway. The impact caused extensive damage to the bus, leading to the driver's death at the scene.

Several passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were subsequently rescued by sympathizers and other road users. The bus, identified by registration number AKL 403 XA, was surrounded by rescuers as efforts were made to evacuate the victims.

A towing vehicle was dispatched to remove the wreckage and restore traffic flow, which had been severely disrupted, causing a major traffic gridlock. Police Public Relations Officer Joshua Ukandu confirmed the driver's death and stated that the injured passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment.
