NDLEA Warns Drug Proceeds Fund Terrorist Networks

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a warning regarding the alarming trend of illicit drug trafficking financing terrorist networks, which poses a growing threat to national and global security. At a bilateral strategic counter-narcotics workshop held in Abuja on Tuesday, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Buba Marwa emphasized the evolving complexity of the global drug problem and the dangerous nexus between drug trafficking and terrorism.

He noted that proceeds from drug sales are often used to purchase weapons, destabilizing regions and funding violent extremist groups. Marwa highlighted Nigeria's strategic geographical location, making it increasingly attractive to international drug trafficking organizations.

The workshop, in collaboration with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), aims to align enforcement leadership and strengthen intelligence-driven operations over the next 12 months. Daphn Morrison, a DEA country attaché in Nigeria, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and disrupting the financial flows linked to organized crime.
