DSS Compensation Initiative Receives Praise from Advocate

Hamza D. Dantani, a legal practitioner and human rights advocate, praised the Department of State Services (DSS) for its initiative to compensate innocent Nigerians who have been wrongfully arrested, unlawfully detained, or harmed during security operations.

He commended the Director-General of the DSS, Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, for this unprecedented decision, which he believes sets a standard for other security agencies in Nigeria. Dantani highlighted the importance of acknowledging mistakes and providing remedies to victims, stating that the fight against terrorism and violent crimes should not compromise justice and human rights.

He cited several beneficiaries of the DSS compensation initiative, including Nura Idris, who received ₦3 million, and Chineze Ozoadibe, awarded ₦10 million. Dantani noted that while monetary compensation cannot fully restore lost time or emotional trauma, it signifies the state's acknowledgment of injustice.

He urged the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, and other law enforcement agencies to implement similar compensation measures for wrongful arrests.
