DSS Compensation Initiative Sets New Human Rights Standard

Hamza D. Dantani, a legal practitioner and human rights advocate, praised the Department of State Services (DSS) for its initiative to compensate innocent Nigerians who have been wrongly arrested, unlawfully detained, or harmed during security operations.

He commended the Director-General of the DSS, Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, for this unprecedented decision, which he believes sets a standard for other security agencies in Nigeria.

Dantani emphasized that while security agencies are tasked with safeguarding the nation, they also have a moral and legal obligation to acknowledge their mistakes and provide remedies to those whose rights have been violated. He cited several beneficiaries of the DSS compensation initiative, including Nura Idris, who received ₦3 million after being wrongfully linked to Boko Haram, and Chineze Ozoadibe, who was awarded ₦10 million following her wrongful arrest over oil bunkering allegations.

Dantani urged other law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army, to adopt similar accountability measures.
