DSS Suspends Sowore's Cybercrime Case Until 2027 Election

The Department of State Services (DSS) has instructed its private counsel, Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, to seek an adjournment of the cyber-bullying case against Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, until after the 2027 presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027. The DSS's case stems from Sowore's posts on August 25, 2025, where he referred to President Bola Tinubu as a "criminal." The DSS aims to obtain judicial interpretation regarding the appropriateness of such statements.

Following Sowore's refusal to remove the posts after a seven-day ultimatum, the DSS approached the court for adjudication on September 16, 2025. A source indicated that the DSS Director-General, Tosin Ajayi, met with senior legal officials on August 20, 2026, to discuss pausing the case to allow Sowore to fully participate in the upcoming elections.

The formal communication regarding the suspension is expected to be made to the Federal High Court on September 14, 2026, after the annual judicial vacation.
